Amy Cappellazzo

What was the first piece of art you ever acquired?

An Andreas Gursky photo of a Swiss landscape and a Kiki Smith self-portrait photo.  I bought these both at a Chicago art fair many years ago.

What is the difference between someone who collects and someone who just buys?

Aching passion.

How has working at an auction house affected the way you collect art?

I’ve gained an awareness of the fact that we are only temporary owners of anything in this life.

Can you tell me an underrated artist or two everyone should check out?

Jessica Stockholder and Shirazeh Houshiary.

Any advice for a new collector?

Use all your senses in the process.
