Richard Phillips likes to say that an artist’s vision should be so powerful that his ideas can survive transference onto any surface whether it be clothing, a clutch, or a tv screen. There’s something egalitarian about this approach and we love the extreme level of confidence it demonstrates. We say confidence, and not cockiness, because Phillips has the goods to back it up having attended Yale grad school and since then exhibiting his work at world-class venues such as Gagosian Gallery in New York and White Cube in London. His paintings are always striking, mostly beautiful, and have a hint of subversion if you look long enough. You might recognize Richard from his star turn on Gossip Girl or his stint as a judge on Bravo’s Work of Art.
